Liverpool is a Marmot City

Liverpool is a Marmot City. This recognises the city’s strong commitment to tackling health inequalities. The accolade was presented by leading health equity expert, Professor Sir Michael Marmot in April 2025. The event showcased the city’s efforts to address the root causes of poor health. These include our jobs and homes, our access to education, public transport and safe green spaces with clean air.

This marks a significant milestone in Liverpool’s journey. Sir Michael met with
cabinet leaders of Liverpool City Council to confirm their commitment to tackling health inequalities across the city. The following event showcased the work of the Fairer, Healthier Liverpool Partnership (FHL). The partnership are working to embed the Marmot Principles across all policies and services. Ensuring fairness and prevention are central to the city’s future. The FHL takes action-focused steps to make changes across the building blocks of health.

Endorsing Liverpool’s efforts, Sir Michael praised the city’s leadership in health equity. As Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Culture, Health and Wellbeing and Director of Public Health Matt Ashton note, becoming a Marmot City is both a proud moment and a call to action. To ensure every resident has the opportunity to live a longer, healthier life.
